Ring size

This one is adjustable — no size needed. It opens across roughly three sizes, so it will fit somewhere on most hands.

Not sure of your size? Measure it in two minutes

Two minutes with a strip of paper now saves three weeks later. Everything is made after you order, so a size change afterwards means starting again.

1. Cut a strip of paper about 5 mm wide.

2. Wrap it round the base of the finger — snug, but it should pass the knuckle with a little resistance.

3. Mark the overlap, lay it flat, measure in millimetres. Find that number in the circumference column below.

  • Measure in the evening. Fingers are largest at the end of the day. Measuring at 8am in January is the single most common reason a ring turns out tight.
  • Between two sizes? Take the larger. A ring you cannot get off is a worse problem than one that turns.
  • Wide bands run small. 6 mm or wider, go up half a size.
  • Adjustable pieces need no size at all — they open a little and hold.

Not sure? Email your measurement to asi8@gmail.com and we will tell you which number to choose. We would far rather spend five minutes on that than remake a ring.

The story

Assyrian palace walls, ninth century BC. Winged figures stand either side of a stylised tree, holding a bucket and a cone, doing something to it that scholars have argued about for a hundred and fifty years — fertilising, blessing, tending. Nobody is certain. What is certain is that the tree is at the centre and the kings put it there.

The same shape keeps arriving. Yggdrasil holding nine worlds together. The tree in Eden with two names. The one in the Qur'an that is neither of the east nor of the west. Cultures that never met each other reached for the same diagram.

Every culture that drew a tree drew it reaching in both directions — as much root as branch, the same amount of the thing hidden as shown.

That is the form here, in silver, spanning two fingers, with rhodolite garnet set into it like fruit.

I will be straight with you about this one. It is the boldest piece in the collection and it is not for every day. A double-finger ring changes how you use your hand; you notice it constantly for the first hour and then you forget, and then somebody in a shop asks you about it.

It is also the piece I would put in a photograph if I only got one.

Rhodolite garnet, from the Greek rhodon — rose. 925 sterling silver with gold plating, hand-finished at every leaf. Made after you order it, up to twenty days.

£219 at launch, £249 after. There is more bench time in this than in anything else here, and it is the piece I most want seen.

Materials

  • Natural rhodolite garnet — 4×6 mm (0.6 ct) and 3×5 mm (0.31 ct)
  • Green nano peridot accent stones — laboratory-grown
  • 925 sterling silver with gold plating
  • Double-finger form, adjustable
  • Made to order, up to 20 days

Garnet has been carried for centuries as a stone of nerve and safe return. Some people feel something. Some don't. If you don't, it is still four thousand years of the same drawing.

What it has been carried for

Garnet

Named after a fruit, and carrying the oldest story there is about wanting something.

  1. 01
    The one everybody knows

    Safe return

Roman travellers carried it. So did soldiers, and later anyone setting out on a road they were not sure of. The idea is not protection from harm - it is coming back.

    Roman and medieval travel custom
  2. 02
    Less known

    The pomegranate

Granatum. Break one open and the seeds are exactly this - dozens of small dark-red translucent things packed tight. Which puts it straight into Persephone’s six seeds: the thing you wanted, and the price, in the same hand.

    Latin, and older than Latin
  3. 03
    Almost nobody knows

    The only light

Rabbinic commentary on Genesis holds that the single light Noah had through the flood was a stone hung from the ceiling of the ark, glowing for a year while it rained. It is not in the text. It is what people decided the text needed.

    Talmudic commentary, Sanhedrin

All of the above is history and folklore, written down because it is real and it is interesting. It is not a claim about what the stone will do. Some people feel something. Some don’t. More in The Codex

Before you decide

Everything we can tell you

  1. 01

    The stone

Garnet. What we know about the material in this piece is written on the page above, in the measurements we were given. Where a stone is lab-grown or treated we say so by name. We never call a treated stone natural, and we never use the phrase “semi-precious”.

  2. 02

    The metal

Solid 925 sterling silver. This design carries a plated finish over that silver. Plating is a surface, and it wears with time; the silver beneath it does not. We never plate base metal, and we never describe plating as solid gold.

  3. 03

    Made after you order

Nothing here sits in a warehouse. Work begins when the order does, and the piece takes up to 20 days before it ships. This one has an open band, so there is no size to choose.

    Size & fit

Open band — adjust gently at the back of the shank, never over the stones.
