February — Amethyst

Amethyst means “not drunken”. A-methystos. The Greeks cut wine cups from it and believed the stone would keep the drinker answerable.

For nine hundred years it was priced alongside ruby and emerald. Then in the eighteenth century enormous deposits were found in Brazil, the supply collapsed, and the price with it. Nothing about the stone changed — only how much of it there was.
