We want this shop to be usable by everyone, including people using a screen reader, a keyboard alone, magnification, or a phone in bright sunlight. This page says what we have done, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us when we have got it wrong.
What we aim for
We aim to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We are not claiming a formal audit or a certificate — we have not had one — so treat this as an honest account rather than a compliance badge.
What is in place
- Every page can be reached and used with a keyboard alone, and there is a skip-to-content link before the navigation.
- Product photographs carry written alternative text describing the piece and the stone, not just the file name.
- Text and background colours were chosen to hold contrast, including the white type over the hero image, which sits on a darkened scrim for that reason.
- On phones, small-caps labels are set no smaller than 11px and tappable rows are at least 44px tall.
- Motion — the hero, the reveal animations and the turning product viewer — is decorative. Nothing you need is conveyed by movement alone, and the viewer can be stepped through with the left and right arrow keys.
- Headings run in order, so a screen reader can be used to jump through a page rather than read all of it.
What we know is not right yet
We would rather list these than let you discover them:
- On phones the product photographs are a horizontal, swipeable strip. There are numbered thumbnail buttons underneath it that can be reached with the keyboard, but the strip itself is still a less comfortable way through than a simple stacked list.
- Some older product descriptions use tables for layout of stone and size information. These read acceptably but not elegantly on a screen reader.
- We have not yet tested the checkout with assistive technology end to end. The checkout is Shopify's rather than ours, but that does not make it your problem to work around.
- The Codex articles contain diagrams we drew ourselves. They have text descriptions, but a few are doing more explaining than a sentence can carry.
Reduced motion
If your device is set to reduce motion, the page transitions and the turning product viewer stop moving on their own. You can set this in your operating system's accessibility settings — you do not have to ask us.
Tell us
If something on this site blocked you, email hello@asieight.com and say what you were trying to do and what got in the way. Tell us what you were using — the browser, the phone, the screen reader — if you know it, but do not let not knowing stop you writing.
We aim to reply within five working days. If a fix will take longer than that, we will tell you how we can get you the same result in the meantime — including simply taking your order by email.
