Sapphire and ruby are the same mineral. Corundum. A red one is a ruby and every other colour is a sapphire — the difference is a trace of chromium, and a naming convention that stuck.
A cabochon star ruby does not sparkle. It holds a six-rayed line of light that moves across the dome as your hand moves. The effect is called asterism, and it comes from needle-thin rutile inclusions aligned inside the stone.
Our ruby is lab-grown, and it says so on the product page.
