The story
Paris, around 1900. For roughly twenty years, the most expensive jewellery in Europe was made largely out of materials that were not expensive.
René Lalique and the Art Nouveau workshops had decided that the diamond trade had made jewellery boring — a competition about carats, judged like an auction. So they used horn. Glass. Enamel. And moonstone, constantly, because it did the one thing a diamond cannot: it changes while you look at it.
A diamond is a fixed performance. It is brilliant in the same way every time, from every angle, forever. Moonstone drifts. The blue moves across it as you turn, weakest here, gathering there, never repeating.
For a movement obsessed with things that grow and turn and are not symmetrical, that was the whole argument.
The fashion died with the First World War, as most beautiful and unserious things did. Moonstone went quiet for fifty years. Then the 1960s took it back for entirely different reasons, and it has not gone away since.
It came back because it was the only stone that behaved like weather.
This one is adjustable — an honest, useful ring rather than a ceremonial one. Wear it on the index finger this month and the ring finger next.
I should say plainly what adjustable costs you: it is not a ring to keep opening and closing for years, and it will not hold a very precise fit forever. What it buys you is that it always fits somewhere, and you do not need to have measured anything before you order.

The one everybody knows
The moon
Pliny the Elder wrote in the first century that the stone held the moon inside it, and that its brightness rose and fell with her. He was a naturalist, not a mystic. He was writing what his century held to be true.
