The story
The stone comes mainly from Siberia and is mined in a short window each year, when the ground is hard enough to work. It is not a substitute for emerald; it is a different, darker green.

Six weeks a year
Almost all of it comes from the Inagli deposit in Yakutia, eastern Siberia. It is mined in a short window each year, when the ground is frozen hard enough to work and before the thaw makes it impossible. Supply is set by the weather.

It travels with diamonds
Diopside is a mantle mineral. Geologists use it as an indicator: find chrome diopside in the gravel and you may be standing near a kimberlite pipe. For decades it was something you looked for on the way to looking for something else.

Chrome diopside. What we know about the material in this piece is written on the page above, in the measurements we were given. Where a stone is lab-grown or treated we say so by name. We never call a treated stone natural, and we never use the phrase “semi-precious”.

Solid 925 sterling silver. This design carries a plated finish over that silver. Plating is a surface, and it wears with time; the silver beneath it does not. We never plate base metal, and we never describe plating as solid gold.
